Kusler Yachts Fishing Chronicles, Volume 1 - Summertime Fishing Heats Up!
When I received the invitation to fish with Captain Pete Groesbeck aboard Bill McWethy's beautiful 75' Titan sport fisher "C-BANDIT", I jumped on the opportunity.
We departed the San Diego Yacht Club at noon on Tuesday with a full load of cured mackerel and 12 scoops of anchovy. With the good fishing for yellowfin and Bluefin tuna, we were headed south 150-175 miles. The weather was good and the Seakeeper gyro stabilizer on board only made it better!
By grey light we were in the upper part of the zone and had a few jig strikes on small sonar schools of yellowfin but nothing on bait. We kept heading southeast where we found a lot more schools of yellowfin on porpoise, sonar marks, jumpers and meter marks. We found on nice kelp loaded with yellowtail and got all we wanted off of it, as well as some more yellowfin.
The day ended with a very cooperative school of yellowfin tuna on some white bellies that gave us the rest of what we needed, and we were headed home.
Although the bluefin tuna eluded us and the rest of the fleet, limits of yellowfin tuna and yellowtail in May sure seems like the start of an amazing Southern California season in 2014!
